Overview

The Phulchoki Hill Day Hike is one of the finest and most rewarding day hikes available in the Kathmandu Valley, offering an exceptional combination of natural beauty, wildlife, and sweeping Himalayan panoramas — all within a single day from the capital. Standing at 2,782 meters, Phulchoki is the highest point on the Kathmandu Valley rim and one of Nepal's most celebrated birdwatching destinations, home to over 200 recorded bird species across its dense subtropical forest slopes.

Beginning from Godavari at the southern edge of the valley, the trail ascends steadily through one of the most biodiverse forests in the entire Himalayan foothills. In spring, the hillsides erupt into a spectacular display of rhododendron blooms in deep red, pink, and white — among the finest floral displays accessible from any major city in South Asia. Year-round, the forest canopy shelters a remarkable array of wildlife including deer, red pandas in the upper reaches, and an extraordinary variety of migratory and resident bird species that draw ornithologists and nature enthusiasts from across the world.

The summit rewards every step of the ascent. From the open hilltop — marked by the small but sacred Phulchoki Mai temple — hikers are treated to a 180-degree Himalayan panorama stretching from the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in the west to the Langtang Himalaya and, on the clearest days, the distant white pyramid of Everest in the east. It is one of the most expansive and accessible mountain views in all of Nepal.

The Phulchoki Hill Day Hike is suitable for hikers of moderate fitness with no prior trekking experience required. It is an ideal introduction to hiking in Nepal and a deeply satisfying experience for nature lovers, photographers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking a genuine escape from the energy of Kathmandu.

Depart your Kathmandu hotel by private vehicle in the early morning, arriving at the Godavari trailhead at the base of Phulchoki Hill. The trail begins through the grounds of the Royal Botanical Garden before entering the protected forest reserve, ascending steadily through dense sal and subtropical woodland rich with birdlife. As the trail climbs higher the forest transitions, rhododendrons take over on the upper slopes, and the canopy opens progressively to reveal wider views across the valley below.

Reach the Phulchoki summit at 2,782 meters by late morning, where the small Phulchoki Mai temple marks the highest point on the Kathmandu Valley rim. Take in the sweeping 180-degree panorama of the Himalayan range — Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang, Jugal, and on clear days the distant summit of Everest — before enjoying a packed lunch at the top with the mountains as your backdrop.

The descent follows the same forested trail, moving at a relaxed pace to allow continued birdwatching and photography on the way down. Return to the Godavari trailhead by mid-afternoon for your private vehicle transfer back to your Kathmandu hotel, arriving refreshed before evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

No prior hiking experience is required. The trail is suitable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness — if you can manage two to three hours of steady uphill walking, Phulchoki is well within reach.
Spring (March to May) is the most spectacular season, when the rhododendron slopes are in full bloom. Autumn (October to November) offers the clearest skies and the sharpest Himalayan views from the summit. The trail can be hiked year-round, though monsoon season (June to August) brings slippery conditions and reduced visibility.
The full hike from Godavari trailhead to the summit and back typically takes six to seven hours including rest stops and lunch at the top. We depart Kathmandu early morning and return by mid-afternoon.
Phulchoki is one of the premier birdwatching destinations in all of Asia. The forest slopes host over 200 recorded species including the Spiny Babbler (Nepal's only endemic bird), various pheasants, laughingthrushes, and a remarkable variety of migratory species during spring and autumn. We recommend bringing binoculars.
Carry at least two liters of water, energy snacks, a light windproof jacket, sunscreen, a hat, and your camera. A packed lunch is provided. A small daypack of five to ten liters is ideal for the trail.
